The Office Episode "The Lover"

"tb" makes a great point that a point about last week's episode of The Office, entitled "The Lover," most certainly deserves a blog post! I will go as far as to say it was my favorite episode in recent memory. The Pam / Michael storyline was hilarious: there is now the potential for Michael to become Pam's stepfather, and that is AWESOME.

But really the best part of the entire episode (season... show history?!) was Dwight asking Michael if he would like him to give him "the chills". There's an egg on your head and the yolk is pouring down... The last time I heard that I was in fifth grade on a playground in that weird sleep-over day-spa dynamic that little girls have where we were all rubbing each other's backs, braiding hair, and painting nails. I laughed until my stomach hurt, and it's been a while since that happened.

  1. I was just signing on to do a post of that, in response to tb's comment. I just told Dustin that, despite how awesome the wedding episode was, last week's episode was the best this season. It's on my all-time favorite list.

What made this episode great for me was that it had absolutely everything that makes me love The Office (well, not really, since Stanley wasn't a major player this week, but I'll get over it).

It had a classic Jim/Dwight face-off, ending with a stellar tag. It had Michael being completely oblivious to the fact that people actually do care about their own lives more than they care about him AND being completely oblivious to how inappropriate his actions are. It had some of my favorite moments ever from Krasinski, when he first hears about it from Michael and then when he's trying to hide it from Pam.

Maybe best of all was Pam's reaction to everything. Dustin thought it was over-the-top. I thought it was 100% perfect. I loved the completely understandable and almost reasonable position that this was just unacceptable, but then the way she expressed that was in this completely childish way, which was just fantastic. And totally in keeping with The Office.

I like that Jim and Pam, while being a large part of the sanity and grounding of the show, occasionally get sucked into the ridiculous behavior of many of the people in the office. Because that's what happens. When you work with a bunch of immature, ridiculous people, you start to behave like one.*

*This is in no way meant to imply that I work with immature, ridiculous people now, because I definitely don't. But I've had other jobs.

  2. Thanks guys. :-)

I think my favorite thing about it was that Pam finally got to ACT. I don't really think she's ever been allowed to do much of anything on the show (apart from the couple of times maybe at the end of Season 2 when she was choosing between Roy and Jim.) But here, for the first time, she was really showing some emotion and her character was really feeling something. The whole episode just struck me as much more dramatic than the usual silly joke-fest. (Don't get me wrong, I love the silly jokes.)

Did you guys like the wedding episode? Metta, you thought it was awesome? I'm not really sure about it. Mostly I was really thrown off by the whole "dance down the aisle exactly like the youtube video" thing. Sly references to pop culture phenomena like Dwight's "Three Wolf Moon" t-shirt are awesome. But doing the youtube thing at the culmination of a five year story arc? Blerg.

Funniest line, by the way, for me, over the last few weeks was Kevin, who "has been borrowing Jim's office to fart in." I lost it.

By the way, this is Tony. At first I thought you all were calling me tb to protect what you thought was my attempt at anonymity. Then I thought maybe you thought I was some random person who happened upon your blog. Then I remembered that you have a friend to whom you refer as TB. So I figured I should clarify. It's me. (And I have no idea why this account posts as "tb") :-) Miss you guys!!

  3. I know it's you, Tony! There was some initial confusion way back when, but I just wrote "tb" now because I assumed you were protecting your identity... or attempting some mild identity theft??

Hope things are awesome in NY!

  4. I really liked the wedding episode. I thought that it was totally appropriate for the wedding to devolve into a copycat of a youtube video. It's totally in keeping with Jim's brothers and with everyone from the office.

Nothing beats Oscar coming down the aisle with his sharp, vogue-like moves. I almost died.

Andy's scrotum injury. Classic. And, of course, the tag setting up "The Lover." Perfect. It wasn't as good as "The Lover." Not even close, in my opinion. But I thought it was a totally appropriate way for the wedding to go down.
