Film - 10 Best Picture Nominees

The Academy will nominate 10 films for this year's Best Picture category! Super exciting. I always love the Oscars and this will make the race even more interesting. Click HERE to read the LA Times article.

And here is the rest of it. Don't delete the line in between, as that is where the magic read more tag resides.

  1. Dustin thought this was a HUGE surprise - bigger than USA beating Spain in soccer today. I disagreed. I think it's awesome, and surprising, but I'm not shocked. Maybe because there have been variations in the number of nominees in other categories over the years.

Anyway, I think it will make the race lots of fun next year. I just hope it doesn't result in additional crap movies getting nominations instead of additional deserving movies getting nominations. I mean, I don't want them adding spots so that more movies like Seabiscuit and Master and Commander can get best picture noms. But I'll be thrilled if those spots are filled by deserving films that would have been left out of the race in previous years - Moulin Rouge, Dark Knight, etc.

  2. I'd be thrilled too, if deserving movies were nominated. Ben said he heard an Academy representative on NPR yesterday cite movies like "Ironman" and "Tropic Thunder" as "deserving" movies that might be included under this new rule. That, I'm not okay with. I have a very bad feeling they're just going to start nominating all manner of commercially successful crap in order to bring in viewers.

  4. Whoa. Tony, you had me weirded out. We have another friend who we call T. B. (even though his name is Mike), and I thought he was the one posting these comments. I was so confused, because I'm pretty sure he'd be cool with Ironman and Tropic Thunder getting Oscar nominations.

Anyway, I agree in theory (even though I loved Iron Man). I think Moulin Rouge is a great example of a movie that should have gotten a best picture nom. It was nominated in almost every category except for Director and Picture. Getting left out of the Director race was actually worse, but my hope is more movies like that or HELLO, CHILDREN OF MEN! will get their well-deserved best picture nods.
