I would just like to underline the incredibly inappropriate nature of the homophobic jokes that Ryan and Simon exchange. Remember just a few short weeks ago when Ryan brought head-band wearing Nathan (who was obviously gay) up to the Judge's table to interact with Simon? As if Nathan would suddenly combust in a super-fabulous strip-tease and we could all laugh at Simon's discomfort? That was awkward as hell and completely wrong.
If you don't think that in 20 years our children will be reading about the intolerance towards the LGBT community in our times, you are deluded. It is your choice if you want to be a part of the progress or part of the problem.
I haven't read the article, but I basically stopped watching the show a few years ago because they did an extremely offensive an unacceptable segment making fun of a transgender teenager. It made me ill. And it wasn't just the comments of the judges. They used voice over, music and editing to make it clear that they thought this person was a complete freak. It was truly disappointing. I think they have taken steps in the right direction in avoiding that level of intolerance, but they definitely have a long way to go.
ReplyDeleteI DO remember that and it was truly disgusting. I think that was the issue that made GLAAD issue a formal protest against the show in 2006.
