TV- Big Love

The new episode hasn't even started yet, but I have to say this. The new opening is UNACCEPTABLE! The old opening was one of the best ever and I was waiting in anticipation for the Beach Boys to start singing, and then this weird emo crap starts playing. Unacceptable. Read more!

Golden Globe Nominations

I really like awards season! Obviously Metta and I have been very busy and too important to post regularly on our little bloggy here, but I did want to make a little comment about one of the nominations:

Matthew MorrisonGlee (FOX)

SERIOUSLY?!?!?11??!?! He is TEH WORST part of that show by a MILLION!!!

However, I was happy to see the multiple nods for Big Love. This past season was phenomenal and I'm glad the nominators didn't forget about this show during its hiatus.

TV - 2009 Emmy Nominations

Recently the nominees for the 2009 Emmy's were released. There were few changes from the nominations of last year, especially in the Drama category. However, Neil Patrick Harris hosting is a major reason to tune-in. The comparison of his sure-to-be awesome take as master of ceremonies to the reality TV hosts debacle of last year will be startling! Furthermore, Jeremy Piven was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series this year, making it seem like NPH will finally get the much deserved award. Read more for further discussion on the few surprise nominees and the snubs.

The category of Best Comedy Series is the most improved. "How I Met Your Mother" finally makes the cut, and "Two and a Half Men" is finally taken off the list. "Flight of the Conchords" is given a nod, which is sort of a better-late-than-never nom considering Season Two was not nearly as brilliant as Season One. "Family Guy" shocked many for its nomination. It's the first animated series to ever be given the nod! The big WTF, though, goes to the nomination of "Entourage," a show that when it's at it's best is only a B minus production and last year was sub-par even by those standards. In the place of "Entourage" should be "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Just in case you forgot, Season Four of the always hilarious "...Sunny..." featured not just the cannibalism episode but also "Who Pooped the Bed?": one of the funniest half-hours to ever grace basic cable.

As for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, I was really happy and surprised to see Jemaine Clement get a nomination for his lovely, quirky performance in "... Conchords." I was also happy to see Jim Parsons get due praise for his performance on "The Big Bang Theory," as he is good enough on that show to make my husband and I tune-in every week despite the corny jokes and lame laugh-track. That's really saying something. The WTF here goes to Tony Shalhoub: really? People are still watching "Monk"?

For the Supporting Actor and Actress nominations I was happy to see Jack McBrayer, Tracy Morgan, Kristen Wiig, Kristen Chenoweth, and Jane Krakowski. I was stupefied by Kevin Dillon making it on the list again.

Moving on to the Drama categories, there isn't much to say as there are barely any changes to the nominations list from last year. The best of the few changes was that "Big Love" was added to the nomination list for Best Drama Series. However, one of the major snubs was that none of the amazing female actresses from Big Love (specifically Chloƫ Sevigny and Amanda Seyfried) were chosen.

And really? House? Last Season was just about as Jump-the-Sharky as seasons can get. There were hallucinations, inexplicable suicides, and then more hallucinations. In its place on the Best Drama list should have been... DUH... BATTLESTAR GA-FREAKIN-LACTICA! That this show wasn't nominated, and hasn't been nominated, and that none of the actors weren't and haven't been nominated is a CRIME punishable by groin kickings.

TV: Big Love Finale

It's been a long time since I've had a chance to post, so we have some catching up to do...

Let's start with the finale of Big Love. What an incredible year! This show's first two seasons played to our outsider interest in a polygamous household's bedroom politics and those kooky kooks from the compound.  Season three first looked like it was going to continue this theme by adding a fourth wife, further exploring issues of marital jealousy and household issues.  Abruptly, this storyline ended and I really had no idea what to expect from the rest of the year.

Concentrating way less on earthly issues such as wife-feuds and business proposals, the show turned it's focus to the heavens and started tackling the concept of religion head-on.  Bill thought he had lost his connection to God, for how could the heavenly father have let his family grow so distant? A letter declaring that polygamy was supposed to be recognized by the Mormon Church brought Bill hope, but it turned out to be a fake.  Barb was heartbreakingly ex-communicated.  In the finale, Bill took a cue from no one other than Roman and decided that it was time for him to "take authority from God" all on his own.  So Bill brings his family together and starts a new Henrickson Church!  Looking forward to seeing how strong the Church becomes in Season Four.

But for me, Season Three was really all about Nicki.  The year, Nicki got a flavor for the outside world and she liked it: she used birth control, got a job, went on dates, and kissed a crush.   She lost faith in her mother and father, and distanced herself from her husband and sister-wives.  In a big reveal, we learned that she has a more dramatic backstory than we previously knew.  She was married at a very young age to Wanda's brother and has a teenage daughter she abandoned.  At the end of the episode she admitted to Barb that she hated herself... will she be able to find peace now that she has embraced her lost daughter?  I think this will depend on whether Bill and the rest of the Hendrickson's welcome her back into the fold, or lose her to the compound.

But seriously, it would be an unforgivable crime if Chloe Sevigny doesn't at least get nominated for an Emmy.

And as for the big major death? Well, we all saw that coming...

TV: Death Surrounds Us! Part 2

There have been updates on the major deaths that are to take place in Big Love and Lost.

For Big Love, it's been confirmed that it is a male character.  Now I am putting all of my money on it being Roman.

For Lost, there will be two deaths: one major, and one major-ish.  In this article, Desmond's picture was featured...  We shall see! I'm thinking the major-ish death could be his beloved Penny.

TV: Death Surrounds Us!

I've already mentioned the rumor that a major-character is going to die in the season finale of Big Love.  After last week's episode I'm getting more and more nervous/excited that it'll be Nikki.  I'm nervous because I love her character, and the actress who plays her.  But I'm excited because that would be a major plot-twist and the show could go in some really interesting directions with the family taking such a major hit.

The more realistic possibility is that Roman will die, and probably by the hands of either Joey or Wanda.   Last week's episode certainly hinted that Alby is definitely close to taking the throne.

My good friends think it will be Ben!  Super intriguing, and that would definitely come out of left-field.

In other death news, it's recently been leaked that a "major" character from Lost will die before season's end.  They say it will be a real death, not like Locke has died.  They also say it's a much-beloved character.   We know for sure it's not Kate... so who could it be?  I'm going to have to think about this one for a while...

Maybe Juliet?
Maybe Sayid?
Couldn't be Hurley, because he's the only comedic character right now... or could it?

If it's Sawyer I will lose my cool and cry forever.

TV: Big Love Teaser

In case you haven't heard, there were/are supposed to be two deaths in this season of Big Love.  One was to be a minor character, and the other was to be the death of a major character.  It is confirmed that the death of Joey's second-wife-to-be last Sunday was the minor death.

The "major death" is supposed to happen in the season finale.  I would only consider it major if we lost someone from the Hendrickson family, meaning a wife or a child.  It has been confirmed that it isn't Sarah.  Who will it be?  It could also be Roman or Alby, which would be significant, but not nearly "major" in my book.

TV: Big Love 2/22

Big Love is like Six Feet Under in that sometimes I think it is the best show on television, and other times I am just caught-up in its silly kookiness.  This past episode (aired on 2/22 called "Family Road Trip"), was the best episode of the show in it's four season history and the best hour of television I've seen in a long time.

After the previous week's episode, where the trial concluded and the fourth wife story-line completed, I was very curious about the future of season four.   We were only half-way through the season, but all the plot elements seemed relatively tied-up!   What to do but go on a road trip?!

The episode could have stood completely on its own as a short film.  I think with just a few tid-bits of background information, anyone could have tuned in and been throughly captivated.  The Sopranos also had the ability to present incredibly cinematic episodes.   Part of why I loved this episode so much was due to how beautiful it was.  The scene where Bill is praying after burying the family time-capsule?  I got goose-bumps all three times I've seen it.

Another reason I loved this episode was because it simply focused on the family.  I get tired of compound drama and I certainly get bored with Bill's business and financial obstacles (there was a bit of casino talk in this episode, but just a smidgen).   My favorite Big Love episodes concern what is happening in their immediate and complicated family.  With so many wonderful characters living all under one roof (sort of), we really don't need so much periphery business to make for an incredible show.
